UMMOA, the industrious non-industry

Does the United Micronations Multi-Oceanic Archipelago (UMMOA) have industries?

There are two general meanings, in the English language, to the word "industry":
  1. economic activity concerned with the processing of raw materials, and the manufacture of goods in factories;
  2. hard work.
Personal experience, and something fast approaching a rigourous social science, Cesidian political science, suggests that if you have a single person, you don't have a nation.

If you have more than one human being, you may have a (nuclear, heterosexual) family if the two human beings are of the complementary genders, or you may have a (polyamorous, heterosexual) family if among the three or more human beings both complementary genders are present.

If you have the most common and most legally- or religiously-accepted case of family, two human beings of the complementary genders, you could potentially have a "mom-and-pop" grocery store, which is more of a distribution service than an industry, but I have personally seen the rare case when the mom and pop actually have a small industry. I used to know a medical student in Italy, and the father and mother of this fellow were artisans who produced artistic pots. It was a genuine mom-and-pop cottage industry, as the fellow's father made the pots by hand, and the mother was a gifted painter. The couple even had their own room-sized pottery oven or kiln, so they were completely self-sufficient in the production of artistic pots.

Yes, a nuclear family can sometimes run a profitable, and thus economically sustainable business, and in some rare cases it can even run its own cottage industry! However, a nuclear family does not make a nation, or better, it does not make a permanent nation by itself, as nations are supposed to be more long-lived than families, businesses, or industries.

I hope the reader is beginning to understand, however, that while mothers and fathers do play together, and if they didn't they could not have children, they don't necessarily work together. That is a higher level activity.

Moreover, it logically follows that two or more individuals who do not work together are not a nation, but a mere social club. There is no such thing as a real nation where people do not work together. There is no such thing as a non-industrious nation, but there can be a nation without industries. This is what Cesidian political science proves; I just have shown that this is truly the case through anectodal evidence. I have also provided the two general meanings in English of the word "industry" in this paragraph. One must apply to all nations (industrious nation), while the other may apply, or may not (nation with industries).

Does the United Micronations Multi-Oceanic Archipelago (UMMOA) have industries?

Well, before the UMMOA even started officially, the Cesidian Root, a high-level IT (information technology) service, was alive and well, so it was founded, like any real nation, on hard work.

The Cesidian Root, an alternative and global root server system (or Internet) with root servers on 5 continents, was founded in September 2005, and the UMMOA was first officially recognised as something more than a business in July 2008, when it was recognised by the International [States] Parliament for Safety and Peace.

It should be noted that such recognition should only be viewed as national recognition, not state recognition. The UMMOA no longer recognises the International [States] Parliament for Safety and Peace as an intergovernmental organisation (IGO), as the organisation has never provided the UMMOA with the services one would expect an IGO to provide, because it is, in reality, too busy trying to substitute or replace governments, than trying to ensure different governments can get along within the community of nations. This is like the priest — who normally only marries couples in good standing — who tries to replace one or more spouses of the couples that he has married in the past. This doesn't make sense, and actually such activity is antithetical to the activity of bringing together new (nuclear) families through the marriage ceremony. Such activity would also represent an inherent conflict of interest.

However, in September 2011, the UMMOA was recognised by the Organization of Emerging African States (OEAS), which not only "introduced" the UMMOA to a wider community of nations and states, but the IGO later even recognised 11 of the UMMOA's claims to insular possessions, within the African continental jurisdiction. The "International Parliament" only specifically recognised Navassa Island (North America) as an UMMOA jurisdition, and in five years it wasn't even capable, or interested in socially introducting the UMMOA to munipalities in Italy and elsewhere it also recognised in the same way. After all, even recognition by a municipality is at least the ground floor mark of a Third World nation. The OEAS, however, has proven itself to be a real IGO, at first recognising only Geyser Reef (Banc du Geyser) as an UMMOA claim, and in May 2012 it recognised another 10 insular claims as being Ummoagian, a total of 11 claims.

The OEAS has also granted Consultative Status to the Cesidian Root and Saint René Descartes University, two UMMOA institutions, and treats the UMMOA itself as a Consultative Agency to the OEAS Secretariat, on the matter of the Oceanic Biome, that is, it recognises the UMMOA community as an environmental (or eco-friendly) organisation, and is also working on improving the status and possibilities of emerging nations in other ways, as the UMMOA Treasury today also functions as a small holding company, besides being a small precious metals reserve.

Another significant recognition the UMMOA has received is this: a United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) examining attorney has described the UMMOA wordmark as indicating "membership in a political organization concerned with international affairs". So the protean UMMOA, or a part of the UMMOA, is not just a recognised IT (information technology) service; is not just a recognised educational institution; is not just a recognised environmental organisation; but the UMMOA has also been recognised by an agency of the US government as an international political party.

Therefore the UMMOA already clearly is, or incorporates, more than a single kind of organisation, and it is clearly far beyond the purpose of a mom-and-pop grocery store, since an international political party can never be a "mom-and-pop" kind of entity. Even in the most extreme case, a "mom-and-pop" kind of entity cannot be an international political party, but a national political party, and even then the entity can only be the beginning of a national political party at best.

It is clear, at this point, that the UMMOA, being a recognised international political party, is also a non-sovereign subject of international law, and the UMMOA has in fact been treated like any other subject of international law by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the past, a permanent international tribunal. So the UMMOA is treated specifically, or indirectly, as a non-sovereign subject of international law by both the USPTO and the ICC.

It is also clear that the UMMOA must be a nation, for subjects of international law like the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM), while being too small, or controlling too little territory to be a state in the full sense, still possess an international legal personality. The only difference between the UMMOA and the SMOM, is that the SMOM is a recognised sovereign subject of international law with full diplomatic relations with 104 states, and official, but non-diplomatic relations with 6 other states. The UMMOA, on the other hand, enjoys official relations only with one de facto state, and also has the recognition, or informal relations with 6 sovereign and non-sovereign nations.

Well, does the United Micronations Multi-Oceanic Archipelago (UMMOA) have industries?

In conclusion, the United Micronations Multi-Oceanic Archipelago (UMMOA) is an industrious nation, as there can be no other kind of nation, but is not, or does not incorporate any industry, only services, and among the services the UMMOA is recognised for are IT services, educational services, environmental services, and business support-like services. So the UMMOA is still a pre-industrial nation, or a Third World nation, as a Second World nation is one that has already started to develop one or more industries.

The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system was originally developed in the 1930's to classify establishments by the type of activity in which they are primarily engaged, and to promote the comparability of establishment data describing various facets of the US economy. The SIC covers the entire field of economic activities. Over the years, it was revised periodically to reflect the economy's changing industry composition and organisation. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) last updated the SIC in 1987.

In recent years, rapid changes in both the US and world economies brought the SIC under increasing criticism. In July 1992, the OMB established the Economic Classification Policy Committee (ECPC). The OMB charged the ECPC with conducting a "fresh slate" examination of economic classifications.

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) today is used by business and government to classify business establishments according to type of economic activity (process of production) in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. It has largely replaced the older Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system, although certain government departments and agencies still use the SIC codes.

We shall use the 2012 NAICS definitions below to classify the UMMOA as a whole, or by its component services, whether these services are recognised or not. An asterisk (*) symbol shall be used to identify officially recognised classifications. For non-recognised classifications, only the UMMOA's most well-developed services will be mentioned.
